No matter if you are creating a brand new kitchen or remodeling your existing kitchen the most important item are the kitchen countertops. Countertops are one of the most visible parts of the kitchen and the most used. Your choice of material plays an important part in appearance and the maintenance of your kitchen. There are some materials that are available such as stainless steel, ceramic tiles, stone composites, stone and various man made materials.

One of the most beautiful materials for kitchen countertops are ceramic tiles. There is a wide variety available and the only limits are your imagination and your budget. There are interior designers that specialize in creating kitchen designs that can help you design the ceramic tiles according to the style of your kitchen. This may be the best way to design your kitchen so that it is suitable for your needs. The only disadvantage is that there may be a bit more cleaning with ceramic tiles after preparing food. You can avoid this by have a sealant applied to the grout between the ceramic tiles to keep them clean and free from bacteria.

Another material that is easy to clean and makes a great appearance is stainless steel. It is very bright and shiny and can blend in with any style kitchen. Stainless steel can last for years and is very strong and durable. This is the perfect material for an active kitchen and can withstand cleaning using harsh chemicals. It is also scratch resistant, dent resistant and does not chip or crack. Your kitchen will always have a sleek, clean look to it with stainless steel.

Another material not many people consider is copper. Copper is a soft metal when it is pure and is very hygienic. Copper kills most bacteria that thrives in kitchen environments. As copper ages, it turns a beautiful soft brown color, which will give your kitchen a mellow appearance. However, because copper is a soft metal means that it will scratch easily. When this happens, all you need to do is gently buff or sand the area until it is smooth. After a few weeks, you will start to notice the warm brown colors reappearing.

There is also a wide variety of stones that can be used for kitchen countertops. Some of the more popular stones are granite, marble, slate and travertine. They come in a wide variety of colors and travertine has the largest variety of colors. The only disadvantage to choosing travertine is the pits and grooves that are a natural part of the stone. A filler must be used if you want the stone to have a smooth surface. Marble has a wide variety of colors and shades and is very smooth, however, marble is very porous by nature and has to have a sealant applied to prevent staining. The same applies for granite and the colors available are somewhat limited. Slate in its natural state is water resistant, stain resistant and easy to keep clean. Slate is also scratch resistant because of its very dense nature.
